Congleton’s Christmas Lights Switch-On proved a huge success, with thousands of visitors filling the town centre on Friday 28 November to welcome the festive season in style. After months of planning, the event came together, delivering an evening full of music, entertainment, community spirit, and the magical moment when the lights illuminated the town.
One of the standout moments of the evening was the Lantern Parade, which led Santa to the Christmas tree, accompanied by the energetic samba group Karamba. Local school child Blake Alsworth joined Santa to help switch on the Christmas lights, delighting the crowds gathered for the big moment. Congleton Rugby Club pulled Santa’s sleigh, guided by Congleton Rotary marshals.
Families flocked to the free Santa’s Grotto in the town hall and the children’s activity zone featuring SEN-friendly activities including Elsa and Anna hosted by Tiara and Titans, and Astbury Darlings soft play. The festive excitement continued with a special rooftop wave from Santa at The Space. With over 40 festive stalls, fairground rides, and a bustling Market Quarter, there was something for everyone.
Crowds enjoyed an impressive programme across two stages, featuring Rode Hall Silver Band, Shakermaker, Harry Jones, school groups, and community performers. Street entertainers and the ever-popular Comedy Elves added extra festive fun throughout the town.
Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Robert Brittain, said: “The Christmas Lights Switch-On is one of the highlights of the year for Congleton. It brings our community together to celebrate, shop local, and enjoy a truly magical atmosphere. It was wonderful to see the town sparkle and share this festive moment with so many families, friends, and visitors.”
The town council extended heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers who made the event possible. Marshals, road-closure stewards, litter pickers, and set-up volunteers gave up their time—standing in the dark, cold, and torrential afternoon downpours—to ensure the event ran safely and smoothly. Their dedication and resilience were vital to the event’s success.
Thanks also go to this year’s event sponsors—Bloor Homes, Castle Green Homes, Congleton Market Quarter, Sibelco, and Spurstow Capital—whose support helps fund the sparkling lights, entertainment, Santa’s Grotto, and essential safety measures.
Congleton’s festive season is now officially underway, local shops are dazzling with creative festive window displays – be sure to take a stroll, spot your favourite, and support Congleton’s brilliant independent traders. The town will twinkle with over 100 Christmas trees and magical festive lights every day from 3pm–11pm, right through to the New Year. The town hall will also shine with a special Christmas projection, running from 12 December to 4 January, from 4pm to midnight. Special thanks go to Whittaker & Biggs for kindly providing office space for the projection equipment, and to Lightec for delivering the display.
