Congleton’s former Deputy Town Mayor, Cllr Robert Brittain, has been elected as the new Mayor of Congleton following a prestigious Mayor Making ceremony held during the Annual Council Meeting on Thursday 22 May in the Town Hall. Cllr Brittain succeeds Cllr Kay Wesley and will serve as Mayor until May 2026. Congleton Town Councillors also voted Cllr Suzy Firkin as Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming year.
In his inaugural address, Cllr Brittain expressed heartfelt thanks to his fellow councillors and the community, saying: “It is a tremendous honour to be chosen to serve as Mayor of Congleton. This town is built on the strength, kindness and spirit of its people, and I look forward to working together to support local initiatives and celebrate the community that makes Congleton so special.”
During the ceremony, Cllr Brittain named his three chosen charities for the year: Mentell, Visyon, and Circus Starr, organisations that provide critical support to mental health and inclusion efforts within the community.
The Mayor also announced that his wife, Susan Brittain, will serve as Mayoress for the year, and Cadet Haru Pepper of Titan Explorer Scouts will take on the role of Mayor’s Cadet.
Following the ceremonial proceedings, the Council moved on to formal business. Councillors voted on and approved the constitution of Council Committees, the appointment of members to working groups, and other formal business for the municipal year ahead.
The meeting was well attended by civic dignitaries, members of parliament, and local residents, reflecting strong community support and engagement with the town’s governance.
Local groups and organisations are invited to participate in the Mayor’s Civic Service and Parade on Sunday 22 June. The parade will depart from the Town Hall at 2.45pm for a 3pm service at St Peter’s Church, followed by light refreshments at the Town Hall.
