Friends of the Blackden Trust present- Gladiator Burials from York’s ‘Cemetery of Secrets’

A talk at Terra Nova School, Holmes Chapel, at 3pm on Saturday 16th March 2019 by David Jennings, Chief Executive Officer of the York Archaeological Trust.

In 2004-5, two excavations in one of York’s major cemeteries uncovered the bodies of 82 skeletons, overwhelmingly males, with numerous injuries, pathological conditions and burial rites. These people displayed signs of having led a life that had physically left its mark on their bodies, while also being treated differently at the time of their death and burial. Since their discovery, they have been the subject of at least three television documentaries, with a theory developing that they were gladiators. If so they give us extraordinary insights into the realities of an aspect of Roman culture that still fascinates us today – life and death in the roman arena.
