Congleton Christmas Festival- Saturday 25th November 2017 – Congleton Town Centre 

Many people attended the Congleton Christmas Festival and Lights Switch-On, on Saturday 25th November. There was lots to see and do, which made for a fun-packed, family day! This included; Christmas Makers Market, Charity Stalls, Reindeer, a full programme of Stage Entertainment, Lantern Procession, Switch-On Countdown and Finale Firework Display! This was all before Santa returned to Lapland at 6.00pm.

Christmas Makers Market

The Christmas Makers Market brought together the finest and often award-winning food, drink, art & craft producers in the area. The High Street and Pedestrian Area was filled with specially selected stall holders who source, grow, rear, bake, make and create the products they sell, which ensures their goods are unique and designed to inspire. The food aspect of the market had the very best seasonal local farm produce, artisan breads, delicatessen and hand crafted cheeses, produced and sourced by people who are passionate about what they do. Charity Stalls

Christmas is a time for giving! Local charities and organisations set up their stalls in the Bridestones Centre (near Argos) and raised funds for their groups or organisations. The groups really entered into the Christmas spirit, wearing Santa hats and putting on some fun, fundraising activities.

Cheshire Reindeer

Reindeer from the Cheshire Reindeer Lodge were in the Town Centre on Saturday 25th November between 1.00pm – 5.00pm at the top end of the pedestrian area (Peacocks end). The Cheshire Reindeer loved ,making lots of new friends in Congleton and being stroked and hand fed their treats and of course many had their photo taken with Santa and his Reindeer in their festive head collars and harnesses. Stage Entertainment

The Christmas Crackers team organised a full day programme of entertainment for the stage- the programme started at 11.00am and was made up of brass bands, choirs, school choirs, dance troupes, local magician Nick Barnes and much more!

Lantern Procession & Workshops

The Grand Lantern Procession left Back Park Street car park (at the back of Carter House) at 5.00pm and made its way to the top of Lawton Street where the parade started at 5.05pm. Santa was picked up in his Sleigh on the way, followed by a crowd of lit lanterns, the whole procession was led by Samba band “Sambamba” as it made its way down Lawton Street and onto the High Street, stopping at Moody Street, in time for the Christmas songs and countdown for the Big Switch-On and Fireworks Display.

Workshops took place at the Electric Picture House, Cross Street throughout November, these were free workshops, open to children of all ages. The Lantern Making Workshops were on Saturdays 4th, 11th & 18th November from 10.30am – 3.30pm. New for 2017, many tried their hands at Samba Workshops, these were also be at the Electric Picture House on Mondays 6th & 13th November from 6.00pm – 8.00pm.

Big Switch-On & Firework Display

Congleton’s Christmas Lights were switched on at 5.30pm this year, followed by a Finale Firework Display- sponsored by Congleton Rotary Club. Santa left for Lapland at 6.00pm and closing the event for the day.

Road Closures

In order to protect the public at this great Community Event there were Road Closures in the Town Centre. These came into force at 7.00am and closed off the High Street from the top of Market Street – to the Town Hall. Vehicles were not be able to access the High Street from Market Street, Moody Street or Canal Street. There was normal access to Morrison’s Car Park and Bus Station. The roads were back open by 8.00pm.

Car Parking

For the Christmas Festival Event, the car parking charges were lifted for the day from 10.00am on the following car parks; Back Park Street, Fairground and Princess Street car parks.


The Christmas Crackers team would like to thank the many volunteers, who helped the make the day a huge success If you would like to be part of the Christmas Crackers Team that delivers this fantastic event, the team are looking for more people to volunteer at the 2018 event- as the event has grown bigger, so has the demand for volunteers to help make the switch on what it is! Volunteering at the Christmas Event can range from helping set-up and clear away, litter picking, helping to marshal the parade and many other jobs throughout the day- any support you can give would be much appreciated!
