Come and enjoy Christmas in Congleton this year!
The 2019 festivities started with the annual Lights Switch-On event in the Town Centre on Saturday 23rd November.
There was a mix of fair rides, street and stage entertainment, hot food stalls and a winter warmer bar area, plus a variety of craft and charity stalls in the High Street and in the Town Hall. The Town Hall was also visited by Santa in his Grotto.
On stage there was a full programme of acts ranging from local school choirs, to singers, dancers and a couple of Elves who made an appearance with their Elf March!
The annual Grand Lantern Procession guided the lit lanterns to the main stage in time for the Town’s Christmas Lights to be switched on at 5.30pm.
Lantern Making Workshops- The traditional Christmas Lantern Making Workshops were held at the Electric Picture House, Spindle Mill, Spindle Street, near the Beartown Brewery. Many people joined the grand procession at the lights switch-on and have been asked to show off their creations again, in a smaller procession for Congleton’s first Tree of Light Service.
Tree of Light Service- Congleton held its first Community Tree of Light service on Saturday 7th December 2019. Organised by Congleton Rotary, with support from Congleton Town Council and Congleton Partnership, the Tree of Light offered the opportunity to remember a loved one this Christmas time as well as raising funds for East Cheshire Hospice and Congleton Rotary charities. Stars were added to the tree, located near the Cenotaph in Lawton Street, and crowds joined the procession or gathered by the tree where Rode Hall Silver Band played and the Can’t Sing Choir sang before the lights were switched on by the Town Mayor and representatives from Congleton Rotary and East Cheshire Hospice.
Community Carol Service- This year’s Community Carol Service will be held in Congleton Town Hall rather than St. Peter’s Church. The service is open to all and takes place on Thursday 19th December, starting at 7pm. The event is expected to be very popular.
