Congleton Oatcake Day

Join in the Congleton Oatcake Games!

Congleton is gearing up to celebrate the mighty Oatcake as it joins in National Oatcake Day on Wednesday 8th

August. Visitors to the town centre will be able to take part in a number of oatcake games – as well as trying tasters and picking up vouchers.
The Oatcake Games have been organised by Congleton Business Group with support from Congleton Town Council in support of this regional food and to encourage families to come into the town centre and support local businesses.
The games will run from 10.30 to 12 noon and local people will have a chance to join in some oatcake fun – including Oatcake throwing, tossing and a variety of races. Thanks to Top Nosh of West Street and the Indoor Market, the first 100 people will be able to enjoy a free oatcake – while everyone who enters the oatcake tossing competition will get a 20% off voucher to use at the Congleton Oatcake Shop on Lawton Street.
National Oatcake Day was started in 2010 by Biddulph DJ Terry Bossons in support of the local food – which are a bit like a pancake or a French crepe but made from a batter of oatmeal, flour, milk and water and cooked on a griddle. Historically, oatcakes were popular with workers in the Stoke on Trent’s pottery and mining industry and they’ve been a staple food around Staffordshire for hundreds of years.
Chairman of the Congleton Business Association, Paul Bates said: “Pancake Day is celebrated all over the country. Oatcake Day is our regional variation. It is a popular local food and sold in a number of businesses in Congleton so during this olympic year we thought it would be fun to join in the celebrations with our own Oatcake Games! There will be medals and podium places up for grabs! We hope it brings more people into the Town Centre which will benefit all the traders.”

The Oatcake day will also be supported by Beartown FM – a new community radio station for Congleton, Sandbach and Alsager.
