Congleton Gets Gold

Congleton was just ‘pipped to the post’ from winning Best Large Town in the UK at this year’s Britain in Bloom awards and was one of only four large towns to scoop a gold medal. Congleton represented the North West in the highly competitive large town category where it narrowly missed out to Truro in Cornwall. The other two towns to get gold were Durham in Northumbria and Perth in Scotland. Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Denis Murphy said: “It was a real honour and privilege to represent the North West in Britain in Bloom. Being part of this prestigious national competition has been great for Congleton and our town really has bloomed this summer! I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved for all the hard work that has gone into the campaign.

We are absolutely thrilled to win gold! This is the highest award that Congleton has ever achieved at this level.”Judges were full of praise for Congleton’s entry, particularly mentioning the strong team spirit, the sense of community, the use of bears, the ‘delightful’ Astbury Mere, the extensive use of the anniversary golden theme and the horticultural initiatives and achievements in the schools. The judges believed that there is every chance that Congleton could go on to be a champion in the future. Whether or not Congleton will be in Britain in Bloom next year will depend on the results on the North West in Bloom competition. The results of this competition will be announced on Friday 24th October.
