Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Kay Wesley, joined children, parents and staff from Buglawton Primary School today (21 May) to take part in Living Streets’ Walk to School Week (19–23 May). The group strolled together from a ‘park and stride’ meeting point at The Church House pub to the school gates, celebrating the many benefits of active travel.
This year’s national Walk to School Week, themed The Great Space Walk, encourages pupils across the UK to walk, wheel, cycle or scoot to school while learning about the health, environmental and safety benefits of moving more.
The Town Mayor praised the pupils and school for their commitment to road safety and sustainable travel: “It was a joy to walk with the children from Buglawton Primary this morning – they knew exactly why walking is important: ‘It’s good for our health,’ ‘It’s better for the planet,’ and ‘It’s safer!’ Ten out of ten to everyone. Thanks for having me – and keep walking every week!”
Headteacher Alison Kennerley added: “We’re proud to take part in Walk to School Week and raise awareness of how important it is for children to stay active and arrive at school ready to learn. Our pupils really understand the value of walking – for themselves and for their community. We’re also committed to making the journey to school safer and hope to attend a town council meeting to ask for help with a 30mph speed limit and a crossing on Buxton Road.”
Buglawton Primary has already taken several steps to support road safety and reduce congestion, and the school hopes more families will continue walking regularly – not just this week, but every week.
