Congleton has a lot to offer this Christmas and throughout! From festive food and drink to special gifts and products for dressing the house, tree or even yourself! The past couple of years has been a challenge for many on the High Street, Congleton Town Council are urging everyone to share some Christmas cheer and support local shops, businesses and events this year.
Switching on the Christmas Lights!
Thousands of residents and visitors turned out to enjoy the atmosphere, entertainment, lantern parade, Santa, a real life Unicorn and festive refreshments whilst browsing the shops and stalls ahead of the switch on at 6.30pm on Friday 26 Novmember.
The display throughout the Town Centre will be on daily from 3.30pm-midnight, until early January 2022.
Return of Congleton’s Touring Santa
The small local charity which took over the Santa Street visits when Congleton Round Table folded in 2015 will be back with their magical Santa tour from Sunday 28 November until Sunday 19 December. You will be able to find out their routes and timings at www.congletonsanta.org.uk. All donations support local charities and organisations.
Shops of Congleton Window Dressing Competition
Look out for Congleton’s beautiful Christmas windows! Judging will take place by Congleton Town Councillors and Officers on Thursday 2 December with first, second and third place prizes up for grabs. If you have a particular favourite window, please social media this with #congletonlocal
Local shops, bars and restaurants are looking forward to sharing their Christmas produce and offers with you. The new lights purchased by Congleton Town Council last year will add extra sparkle and Congleton Partnership and the Town Council has sponsored 100 small trees for local shops to add to the festive feel. The last Makers Market of 2021 will be on Saturday 18 December from 10am – 4pm and the retail market every Tuesday and Saturday.
Take advantage of Free Parking
Car parking will be FREE in Princess Street, Fairground and Back Park Street (Lawton Street) car parks on Saturdays: 4th, 11th & 18th December after 10am. Time restrictions on the short stay car parks still apply. This is part of the Cheshire East offer of four free days of parking per year and means you’ll have more time to linger in town!
Tree of Light
Congleton Rotary Club with the support of Congleton Town Council will be lighting the ‘Tree of Light’ in the Community Garden (off Lawton Street) on Saturday 4 December. A short service will take place by the tree at 4.30pm and the lights will be switched on at 5pm. Stars for the railings around the tree can be purchased online via the Congleton Rotary website or in the Congleton Information Centre in the Town Hall, as well as the local Funeral Directors. Stars are £5 each and people purchasing are asked to write a name or a message to a loved one that can’t be with them this Christmastime. Completed stars will be added to the tree in time for the switch-on. More can be added until 10am on Christmas Eve.
Last year local people were incredibly generous donating more than 600 toys for local children whose families were less able to afford toys. This year people still need our help and Congleton Town Council, Boots Barn Road and Plus Dane are supporting the Chronicle and NSPCC Toy Appeal. New toys can be dropped at the Town Hall or Boots Barn Road until 15 December. Toys are distributed through social services and other community contacts to those most in need.
Town Christmas Carol Service
The town will be coming together on Thursday 16 December to enjoy carols at St Peter’s Church from 7pm. There will also be a variety of crib and carol services at various churches across the town in the lead up to Christmas.
Christmas Lunch at the Old Saw Mill
Once again the Old Saw Mill will be putting on a Christmas lunch on 25 December for those who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas day. The cost for the Christmas Dinner is £12. More volunteers are needed to help serve and support the Christmas day lunch. For more information contact the Old Saw Mill in Back River Street on 01260 277658 or call in and have a chat. The Old Saw Mill will also continue to deliver chilled fresh cooked meals on a Friday and would appreciate more volunteers to help deliver a few meals on a Friday morning.
