Councillor Charles Booth as new Congleton Town Mayor

2017-18 Mayor Cllr Charles BoothAt the Annual Town Council meeting held on Thursday 4th May 2017, Councillor Charles Booth was elected as the new Town Mayor of Congleton. Cllr Booth was elected as a Town Councillor two years ago at the 2015 elections and this will be the first year that he will undertake Mayoral duties. Cllr Suzie Akers Smith was elected as the Deputy Mayor and her husband Peter will be her consort. Both Councillors will serve their roles for the year 2017/18.

At the meeting, Cllr Booth appointed his wife Mrs Aimee Booth to be Mayoress to assist with the various civic functions. Joseph Krinks from the Air Training Corp 230 Congleton Squadron was appointed to be the Mayor’s Cadet for the year, Joseph will also support with the mayoral functions.

Cllr Charles Booth said: “I am really looking forward to my year as Mayor and all the engagements and challenges that come with it! As a young Mayor from an unconventional background, my aim for the year is to promote openness and accountability, and to encourage people to actively and patiently engage with the local community. I would like to see people from all different backgrounds in the decision making process. I want to make sure that everyone, especially the younger generation voices their opinions and get more involved with local causes, events and voluntary organisations.”

Each year the Mayor carries out a number of fund raising events, such as the Annual Mayor’s Ball; the funds raised through these events will go towards a charity chosen by the Mayor for that year. Cllr Booth will be supporting youth services, confirmed so far are: Friends for Leisure, New Life Church and Visyon.

At the Mayor Making ceremony, thanks were giving to the retiring Mayor Cllr David Brown for all his work over the past year. Thanks were also given to his daughter, Mayoress Jane Brown and Cadet Daniel Bonney for the support they gave throughout the year. In total Cllr Brown raised £10,000 for his chosen charity- East Cheshire Hospice- a large sum of the funds raised came from Congleton’s first triathlon event.
